Milunka Savić was born on June 28, 1892, in the vicinity of Jošanička Banja, in the village of Koprivnica, municipality of Raška. As a volunteer, she enlisted in the First Balkan War under the name Milun Savić. Under this name, she participated in the First Balkan War, fighting in the ranks of the Third Serbian Army, until she was wounded during the Battle of Bregalnica in the Second Balkan War, after which her true identity was revealed.

During World War I, she distinguished herself with her bravery as a fighter in the Second Toplica Infantry Regiment "Knjaz Mihailo." She participated in the Battle of Kolubara, the defense of Belgrade in 1915, and the battles on Kajmakčalan. For her displayed courage, Milunka Savić was promoted to the rank of sergeant and received the highest Serbian and French military decorations, such as the Order of Karađorđe's Star with Swords, the Miloš Obilić Medal, and the French Legion of Honor.

After World War I, she spent her life in Belgrade, doing the hardest jobs and raising four children. Milunka Savić passed away on October 5, 1973.

The Royal Yugoslav Court Fund contains numerous requests for financial and other types of assistance sent by Milunka Savić, one of which is this letter from December 1938 addressed to the Royal Court Office of Queen Maria Karađorđević.
